Parliament: Second Police Unit Soon to Expand in Schleswig-Holstein by 2027

CDU politician Karin Prien, standing in for the sick Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, announced in the Kiel state parliament that a second police task force in Schleswig-Holstein would be fully operational by 2027. She said, "Our security has the highest priority."

The initial battalion of the second task force, comprising 25 officers, has been ready since August. By 2027, the force will grow to its maximum capacity of 123 police officers, noted Prien. This expansion would alleviate pressure on local officers and strengthen the country's security during uncertain times.

The SPD submitted a motion on Thursday, advocating for the black-green coalition government to complete the expansion by the end of the legislative period, estimated to be in spring 2027. Bernd Buchholz, the former Economics Minister from the FDP, praised the efforts, emphasizing the need for a well-equipped police force in enforcing the state's monopoly on the use of force.

More on the Police Force

The Schleswig-Holstein police force is a vital institution, tasked with ensuring public safety and order. In addition to general patrol duties, the force includes specialized units such as aviation, water, road, and port patrols, as well as crime investigation services.

The budget for the police force is a component of the overall city-state budget in Hamburg, with specific allocations not being publicly disclosed. However, budgets for internal security and crisis management in other German states, such as North Rhine-Westphalia, show a trend of increased spending.

Ensuring Regional Security

The Hamburg Police's comprehensive structure, including specialized units like the Special Task Force and Mobile Surveillance Task Force, ensures a robust response to various security threats. The force also operates its own museum and educational institutions, like the Police College Hamburg, which contribute to the professional development of police officers.

Future Developments

While specific plans for a second police task force in Schleswig-Holstein are yet to be announced, the Hamburg Police remains committed to modernization and innovation. Recent initiatives, such as the change in police uniforms from green to blue, demonstrate this ongoing evolution of the force.

The expansion of the second police task force in Schleswig-Holstein is expected to bolster regional security and address the challenging budgetary environment. The vision to enhance public safety and order while ensuring the police force is adequately equipped aligns with the general trend in German state budgets, prioritizing internal security and crisis management.
