Second season unveiled for darkly comedic suspense series, Dept. Q by Netflix
Dept Q Season 2 Returns to Netflix with a New Mystery
Excitement is building as Netflix prepares to bring back the critically acclaimed crime drama, Dept Q, for a second season. Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin, Netflix executives, have expressed their enthusiasm for the return of the series, praising it as a "band of glorious misfits" led by DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode).
The main cast from the first season will return, including Jamie Sives as Morck's partner, Hardy. Showrunner Scott Frank, who brought best-in-class storytelling to the first season, will continue to lead the creative team in season 2.
The new season will see Carl and his team delving into another cold case that was previously deemed unsolvable. The plot is expected to deal with both the new investigation and Carl's personal struggles, including trauma and guilt related to a previous shooting that critically injured Hardy.
The first season, which consisted of nine episodes, spent six weeks in the Global Top Ten on Netflix earlier this year. It followed Morck as he opened Department Q, a new branch of the police department, to investigate unsolved cases. The first case involved the investigation of the disappearance of a prosecutor called Merritt Lingard.
Season 2 is expected to draw inspiration from the second book in Jussi Adler-Olsen’s series, Disgrace, following the first season's adaptation of The Keeper of Lost Causes.
Netflix announced the renewal of the series by August 2025 but has not provided a specific premiere date for season 2 yet. Goode has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to return for a second series, promising more of the darkly humorous one-liners that made the first season a hit. Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne, and Jamie Sives will also return in their respective roles.
Fans of the first season can catch up on all episodes of Dept Q season 1, which are currently available on Netflix. Filming for season 2 will continue in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stay tuned for more updates on the release date of Dept Q season 2.
