Second Administration of Trump with Focus on ATF Discussions Led by John Lott
In an exclusive interview, John Lott, the founder of the Crime Prevention Research Center, discusses his experiences at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and explores what the new Trump administration is doing.
Lott accepted a position as a senior adviser for research and statistics at the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), a division of the DOJ that gives out billions in grants annually, during the first Trump administration. In his role as an advisor, Lott aimed to bring balance to the massive grant allocations of the OJP, which, according to him, had a clear bias against the right to keep and bear arms.
However, Lott encountered resistance from officials in various agencies within the DOJ in his attempt to balance grant allocations. This resistance was not unexpected, given his reputation as a pro-gun advocate, a label he disputes as he is a researcher and academic. In fact, his peer-reviewed research has shown that gun ownership tends to reduce crime.
His tenure at the DOJ was not without controversy. A group of gun control advocates wrote a letter to then-Attorney General William Barr during the first year of Donald Trump's presidency seeking information about Lott's employment at the DOJ. Gun-control groups disliked Lott and wanted him fired during the previous Trump administration. They even launched a coordinated campaign to demand Lott's firing, including petitions on social media.
Despite the opposition, Lott remained steadfast in his mission to bring balance to the OJP's grant allocations. He expresses his hopes for what the new Trump administration might do in the context of his experiences at the DOJ.
The Crime Prevention Research Center, founded by Lott, is a non-profit research and education organisation dedicated to conducting academic research and providing information to the public about the use of guns for self-defence. The center's website showcases research papers written and co-written by Lott.
Lott has written many books on the subject of guns and crime in America. His latest book, "The War on Guns: Arming Yourself Against Gun Control Lies," is a comprehensive guide to the history and politics of gun control in the United States.
As the new Trump administration continues to shape its policies, Lott's experiences at the DOJ serve as a reminder of the ongoing debates surrounding gun rights and gun control in America.
