Sebastian Fitzek reflects on 20 years of thrillers, self-doubt, and record-breaking success

Sebastian Fitzek, one of Germany's most successful thriller writers, is marking two decades since his debut. His first novel, The Therapy, launched in 2006 and set the stage for a string of bestsellers. Yet, despite his achievements, the author admits to persistent self-doubt about his career.

Fitzek's journey began with The Therapy, a thriller that introduced readers to his gripping style. Over the years, his books have repeatedly topped charts, including Passenger 23 in 2014—a novel he initially believed would flop. More recently, The Neighbor became the most-read hardcover of 2025, according to Media Control. Another standout, AchtNacht, even claimed the title of Germany's best-selling novel in its release year.

His latest work, *REM*, co-written with Annika Strauss, dives into horror-thriller territory, exploring themes of nightmares and insomnia. The book adds to a long list of successes, though Fitzek has confessed that his greatest fear is being told his writing career isn't real. This year, the author will celebrate his 20th anniversary with two special performances at Berlin's Waldbühne in August. Additionally, he will have his own dedicated stand at the Leipzig Book Fair—a rare honour for a writer.

Fitzek's career spans hit after hit, from The Therapy to The Neighbor and beyond. His upcoming events in Berlin and Leipzig highlight his enduring popularity. Yet, for all his accomplishments, the author remains haunted by the fear that his success might somehow vanish.
