A Quick Hit: Mariners' Pitching Blues

Oof, more trouble for Seattle's banged-up rotation! Bryce Miller's their latest casualty, joining George Kirby and Logan Gilbert on the injured list due to arm troubles.

But Bryce ain't too worried – he's hoping this setback would ultimately lead to brighter days! After undergoing an MRI, no structural damage was found in his elbow, though inflammation was an issue. He got a cortisone shot to sort that out and hopes to be away from the field just for a fortnight.

"It sucks being on the IL, and I'm gutted to miss starts, but the good news is that everything else in my elbow looks great," Miller shared. "They've told me it'll feel good once we're done with this, so I'm focusing on taking care of it now and being good to go through the summer and into the playoffs."

Miller's struggled this year, going 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA, 21 walks, and 35 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings. That 12.1% walk rate is over twice his career average, and he's been vocal about arm and back soreness. Turns out, the elbow pain dates back to last season.

"I've tried everything I could possibly think of arm-care-wise and preparation-wise, and it hasn't improved," Miller revealed. "It was at the point where it wasn't getting better doing what we were doing. And I don't think continuing to push it was going to magically fix it."

Fun fact: In 2024, Miller was one of the American League's best pitchers, posting a 2.94 ERA in 31 starts. He had 171 strikeouts and 45 walks in 180 1/3 innings.

The Mariners have been shockingly fortunate with their rotation's health over the past two seasons, with their starters logging the most innings in the majors. Already, they've missed Kirby and Gilbert due to injuries, and Miller joins that list now.

"We've had to weather the storm with some injuries, and we'll just have to keep grinding it out," said manager Dan Wilson.

They've been optimistic about Kirby and Gilbert’s progress, though. Kirby's scheduled for a third rehab start on Friday, and Gilbert tossed his first full-fledged throwing session off a mound on Tuesday. Both players are expected to return soon, which should give the rotation a much-needed boost!

Additional Insights:- Seattle called up Jhonathan Díaz from Triple-A Tacoma to fill Miller's spot on the roster.- J.P. Crawford was scratched from the lineup with tightness in his shoulder. His status is day-to-day.
