Seattle and Boston mayors bet seafood on Super Bowl 2025 outcome
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has challenged Boston Mayor Michelle Wu to a friendly food wager ahead of the Super Bowl 2025. The bet involves sending local seafood specialities depending on which team wins. Wilson also raised the 12th Man flag at the Space Needle on Friday to rally support for the Seahawks.
Wilson, who is not a die-hard sports fan, still recalls the excitement in Seattle during the Seahawks' 2014 Super Bowl victory. She attended the recent NFC Championship Game but plans to watch the upcoming Super Bowl match in a local bar. Her enthusiasm extends beyond football, as she looks forward to the World Cup later this year.
The wager itself follows a tradition of mayors exchanging local delicacies when their teams compete. Wilson has offered Dungeness crab, while Wu has put forward New England lobster. Past bets between cities have included barbecue and cheesesteak, but this marks the first documented wager between Seattle and Boston for a Super Bowl 2025.
In 2015, the two cities faced off in Super Bowl XLIX, where Seattle lost to Boston's Patriots. At the time, Boston's then-mayor Marty Walsh declined a similar bet, citing superstition after losing his previous two Super Bowl wagers.
The outcome of the wager will see one city's seafood shipped to the other, depending on the game's result. Wilson's flag-raising and the bet add to the buildup as Seattle prepares for the Seahawks' return to the Super Bowl 2025. The challenge reflects the long-standing tradition of lighthearted rivalry between competing cities.
