Season's end for Bucs' Calijah Kancey as he undergoes surgery
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Lose Defensive Tackle Calijah Kancey for the Season
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have suffered a significant blow to their defense, as defensive tackle Calijah Kancey will undergo season-ending surgery due to a torn pectoral muscle. The injury occurred during the second quarter of the Buccaneers' game against the Houston Texans on Monday, during their 20-19 victory.
Kancey, a seventh-year veteran, was selected by the Buccaneers with the 19th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. He has played 28 career games (all starts) for the team, recording a total of 55 tackles and 11.5 sacks. In the two games he played this season, Kancey managed to record one tackle.
The Buccaneers will likely rely on seventh-year veteran Greg Gaines and rookie Elijah Roberts, a fifth-round pick, to fill the void left by Kancey. Roberts, who was recently promoted to the active roster, could see increased playing time as a result of this injury. The team may also consider deploying Michael Jordan, previously a guard in the practice squad, to fill the gap caused by Kancey's injury.
The diagnosis was confirmed by an MRI conducted on Tuesday, and Kancey is scheduled for surgery on Friday. Kancey played college football at Pittsburgh before joining the Buccaneers.
Despite this setback, the Buccaneers remain undefeated, with a record of 2-0 in the season. They will look to continue their winning streak as they face their next opponents. The team and its fans will undoubtedly be hoping for a speedy recovery for Calijah Kancey.
