Basketball team Indiana Fever experiences yet another setback as key players Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson sustain season-ending injuries, exacerbating their ongoing health issues.

Season-ending injuries plague WNBA's Indiana Fever, as both Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson face sidelining. Ongoing health troubles persist for the Fever.

The Indiana Fever are facing a significant challenge in their backcourt after losing key players to season-ending injuries. On August 7, during their game against Phoenix, Sydney Colson suffered a left ACL tear [1][2], and Aari McDonald fractured a bone in her right foot [1][4]. Caitlin Clark, another star guard, has been sidelined since mid-July due to a right groin injury, with no clear return timeline [2][3].

These injuries have left the Fever without any healthy point guards as of early August 2025 [1][2]. In response to the crisis, they signed Odyssey Sims to a 7-day hardship contract on August 10 [1].

Veteran Kelsey Mitchell has stepped up to become the primary playmaker and leader in the backcourt, shouldering increased responsibilities amid these absences [5]. However, the lack of experienced point guards beyond Mitchell and Sims is a concern, and other guards or wing players like Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull may need expanded roles [4][5].

Despite these challenges, the Fever have managed to maintain a 17-14 record and hold a playoff position (fifth place) at the time the injuries were announced [2]. However, the lack of healthy backcourt personnel poses a serious obstacle to maintaining their momentum heading into the final stretch.

Aari McDonald, signed early in the season on a hardship exemption and then for the season after DeWanna Bonner was waived, had been a major depth piece for the Fever's postseason plans. In her 20 games with the team, she averaged 9.8 points and 4.7 assists per game [6]. Her absence will be a considerable blow for the Fever's playoff aspirations.

Sydney Colson, who appeared in 30 of the Fever's 31 games this season, averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 assists per game [7]. Her loss is also felt deeply within the team.

The Fever continue to hope for Caitlin Clark's return, as she remains sidelined with her groin injury [2][3]. The team is still contenders for the playoffs, with the hopes of getting Clark back to full strength.

Despite the setbacks, the Fever have shown resilience, with Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell providing stellar play [8]. The team will need to rely on this resilience as they navigate the remainder of the season.

  1. Given the season-ending injuries to multiple guards, including Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, and Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever are (currently) without any healthy point guards as of early August 2025.
  2. To address the crisis in their backcourt, the Indiana Fever signed Odyssey Sims to a 7-day hardship contract on August 10.
  3. The WNBA, just like the NBA, is a sport that demands strategic planning, and with the lack of experienced point guards beyond Kelsey Mitchell and Odysse Sims, other players like Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull might need expanded roles.
