Season commences for DEG on 17th December
The Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) is gearing up for an exciting new season, with a unique playoff format that promises intense competition.
In a recent announcement, Harald Wirtz, CEO of DEG Eishockey GmbH, expressed his delight at the start of the new season. The 2021-2022 DEL season will see all 14 teams in action, a testament to the collective effort of various parties involved.
The season will begin with an initial division of the 15 teams into two groups, the North and South, each with 7 teams. Each team will then play matchdays against the others in their group, accumulating points for wins and overtime results.
After the initial phase, teams in mid-table will participate in Breakout Games, a form of additional qualification round, to finalize playoff spots. The playoffs will then follow, with the top teams competing in best-of-seven series to determine the champion.
The playoffs will be in a "best of three" format, with 8 teams participating - the top 4 from each group. The games will be crosswise, with the best North team facing the worst South team and vice versa.
Broadcast coverage will be provided by MagentaSport for comprehensive live streaming and on television, mainly by Sport1, which will air selected live matches and highlights.
Wirtz believes that the 38 regular season games followed by playoffs is a good solution for a serious season. There will be no relegation in this season.
Wirtz included fans as an essential part of those who made the season with all 14 teams possible. He expressed gratitude to players, shareholders, partners, sponsors, and DEG fans for their hard work and dedication.
The success of the season is a result of the collective effort of everyone involved, from players to shareholders, partners, sponsors, fans, and other club parties. Wirtz considers everyone involved in the season with all 14 teams as part of the DEG family.
He also expressed his gratitude to the involved parties of all other clubs, thanking them for their hard work over the past weeks and months to make this positive announcement possible.
The DEL differs from leagues like the Swedish Hockey League or the Kontinental Hockey League in structure but generally includes phases of round-robin group play, followed by knockout playoffs leading to the championship. This new season promises to deliver the same thrilling competition that the DEL is known for.
So, get ready for an exciting DEL season with the playoffs promising intense competition and high-octane action!
With the DEL season commencing, hockey enthusiasts can anticipate a captivating National Hockey League (NHL)-style playoff format, as teams square off in a "best of three" series. The fledgling season, set to feature all 14 DEL teams, is the result of the combined efforts of players, shareholders, partners, sponsors, and devoted fans.
