The upcoming pro-Palestinian solidarity event in Berlin's Neukölln district, organised by The Left, has stirred controversy due to the involvement of the United Palestinian National Committee (UPNC). The Interior Administration has previously pointed out that the UPNC, an umbrella group supporting Hamas and associated with other anti-Israel extremists, has been mobilising for public assemblies related to the Middle East conflict since the Islamist Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The UPNC, classified by the Berlin Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as enemies of the constitution with anti-Israeli attitudes, is listed as one of the speakers for the event titled "Neukölln stands together - Solidarity with the people in Palestine." Critics have raised concerns about the group's participation, given its reported ties to supporters of the Islamist-terrorist Hamas and the secular-left nationalist terrorist organization PFLP.

The originally planned venue on Hermannstraße has been cancelled, and the event on Saturday afternoon is not expected to be cancelled. The Left Neukölln's co-spokesperson, Hermann Nehls, earlier stated that he assumes there are no ties to Hamas among the invited guests. However, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution's 2024 report characterises the UPNC as participating in events marked by "anti-Israel and terror-glorifying speeches" and considers them part of Islamist extremism/terrorism.

The controversy surrounding the event has led to strong criticism from German authorities and political figures. District mayor and SPD co-state chairman Martin Hikel, in a statement to the "Berliner Morgenpost," labelled the event as openly aligning itself with anti-Semites and supporters of Hamas terror. The Left Neukölln, however, is searching for new venues for the pro-Palestinian solidarity event and is confident they'll find suitable premises.

In light of the UPNC's controversial standing, the debate surrounding the event highlights the delicate balance between freedom of speech and the need to combat extremism and terrorism in Germany. The event, regardless of its new location, is likely to continue to spark discussion and controversy in the days to come.
