Search party employs drones to locate Alaska hiker, reportedly immobile, following a grizzly bear encounter on a frequented route
In the Chugach Mountains near Anchorage, a woman was mauled by a grizzly bear on the Basher Trail on July 22, around 2:30pm. The woman's injuries are reported as non-life threatening, but she was airlifted from the scene to the hospital for treatment.
The bear ran off after the attack, leaving the woman unable to walk. Officials are urging everyone in the vicinity to brush up on their bear safety and carry bear spray, as advised by multiple agencies, including Anchorage PD, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and Alaska State Troopers.
When encountering a grizzly bear, the recommended response includes staying calm, not running, and using bear spray as the primary defensive tool. Carry bear spray in an easily accessible location and be prepared to deploy it if the bear approaches aggressively or charges.
To make it harder for the bear to turn you over, spread your legs when playing dead. If a bear charges or is too close (within 20-30 feet), deploy bear spray aiming slightly downward and adjusting for wind, creating a cloud that can deter the bear effectively. Practice carrying and using bear spray before entering bear country.
In a defensive maneuver to stay safe, if charged by a grizzly bear, play dead by lying flat on your stomach with hands clasped behind your neck. If the attack seems predatory (rare), fight back aggressively with whatever is at hand.
To avoid surprise encounters, hike in groups, make noise, and remain vigilant, especially during peak bear activity seasons like summer salmon runs. Avoid hiking in trails when warnings are posted, such as near recent bear sightings or attacks.
In case of a charging or approaching grizzly bear, it's advisable to leave your backpack on. If running, hiking, or camping in grizzly country, it's crucial to carry bear spray.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has closed the area for searches for the bear. The woman called 911 for assistance, and drone technology was used to locate her, which took approximately one hour.
