Search for the missing fisherman called off by Coast Guard following boat capsizing, leaving four crew members unaccounted for
In the chilly waters off the coast of Oregon, the U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing fisherman following a tragic incident involving the capsizing of a 40-foot vessel named Das Bug. Three individuals—captain Perry Bordeaux and two crew members—were rescued and treated for hypothermia, but a fourth man, identified as Ishan Pillai, remains missing.
The incident occurred on August 11, 2025, in the vicinity of Newport. The Coast Guard conducted an extensive search, including evening operations and a first-light aerial search covering 54 square miles. However, despite challenging conditions with 7-foot swells and 13-knot winds, no sign of the missing man was found.
The decision to suspend the search was a difficult one, according to Lt. Cdr. Jacqueline Hunnicutt, the search and rescue mission coordinator for Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. The search covered a total area of 54 square miles, and the rescued individuals were treated for hypothermia and transferred to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital.
Following the search suspension, a marine casualty investigation has begun. The missing man’s family, who recently arrived from California, is being supported by a local nonprofit organization, Newport Fishermen’s Wives, which is accepting donations on their behalf.
The Coast Guard's efforts were not the only search and rescue operation taking place. A separate incident was reported involving a man sentenced to time served for trying to open a plane door and stab a flight attendant in the neck. However, no connection was established between the two incidents.
This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers that mariners face and the dedication of the Coast Guard to ensuring the safety of those who ply the seas. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the missing fisherman during this difficult time.
