In the unsettling waters off the coast of Oregon, the U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing fisherman following a tragic incident involving the capsizing of the 40-foot fishing vessel, Das Bug, near Yaquina Bay Jetty.

The incident occurred on August 10-11, 2025, when the vessel took on water and capsized, leaving four crew members in the frigid waters. Three of them were swiftly rescued by a Coast Guard crew and transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Unfortunately, one crew member remains missing.

Over the course of eight hours, crews from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay and an MH-65 Dolphin crew from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend conducted extensive searches covering a total area of 54 square miles. The operations were carried out in challenging conditions, with 7-foot swells and 13-knot winds. Despite their best efforts, the Coast Guard was unable to locate the missing fisherman.

Lt. Cmdr. Jacqueline Hunnicutt, the search and rescue mission coordinator for Coast Guard Sector Columbia River, described the decision to suspend the search as a difficult one. She expressed her thoughts being with the family and loved ones of the missing fisherman during this time.

On August 20, 2025, the Coast Guard recovered the empty vessel, Das Bug, off the Pacific northwestern coast, but the fisherman was not found. This unfortunate discovery reinforced the decision to suspend the search.

It's important to note that this article does not cover other incidents, such as the one in Malibu, California involving a mountain lion attack or the marijuana reclassification by the Trump administration. This article focuses solely on the tragic incident off the coast of Oregon and the subsequent search efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard.

  1. The international politics surrounding the Pacific Northwest might have been overshadowed by the tragic fishing vessel accident off the coast of Oregon that occurred on August 10-11, 2025.
  2. In addition to the Coast Guard's efforts in the search and rescue mission, general news outlets covered the unfavorable weather conditions during the operation, with 7-foot swells and 13-knot winds.
  3. As the weather forecasting predicted, the search for the missing fisherman proved challenging due to the harsh weather conditions, and the Coast Guard is now focusing on strategies to improve weather-forecasting for such critical incidents.
  4. One might wonder if car-accidents or other incidents, such as the mountain lion attack in Malibu, California or the marijuana reclassification by the Trump administration, could have grabbed headlines instead, had the search for the missing fisherman not been so gripping.
