In a significant development, the Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office in Germany is leading an investigation focused on potential sabotage and threats to maritime critical infrastructure. The investigation, which is being carried out in close cooperation with the Flensburg Regional Court Public Prosecutor's Office, is centred around a suspected espionage case.

The investigation was initiated following a search conducted on the freighter "Scanlark" in the city of Kiel on September 7, 2025. The search was carried out by the Schleswig-Holstein State Police and the Lower Saxony Police at the Kiel-Holtenau lock.

According to information transmitted by Landeskriminalamt Schleswig-Holstein, the search was based on a suspicion of espionage and sabotage-related activities, as well as potential security threats. The suspected activity involves a drone that was launched from the searched ship on August 26, 2025. The drone was reportedly controlled via a naval vessel to reconnoitre and take images of a specific target.

The Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office holds the press authority for the ongoing proceedings, and no further information will be provided at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. The search was conducted to prevent threats to Germany's maritime critical infrastructure and as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected espionage for sabotage purposes and endangering security.

Senior Public Prosecutor Petersen-Throe can be contacted at 0461 89345 for any queries or updates regarding the investigation. The Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting investigations into the matter and is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to maritime critical infrastructure.
