Ongoing Quest for Laura Dahlmeier: Pursuit Remains Unabated - Search continues for missing individual, Laura Dahlmeier
In a tragic turn of events, Laura Dahlmeier, the two-time Olympic biathlon champion from Germany, has passed away in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan. The accident occurred on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range, at an altitude of around 5,700 to 6,000 meters, on Monday, July 28, 2025.
Dahlmeier, who retired from competitive biathlon at the age of 25 in May 2019, was climbing with her rope partner when she was hit by a rockslide. Despite prompt rescue efforts, the harsh conditions and high elevation made the rescue operation impossible. The search for Dahlmeier was temporarily suspended on Tuesday evening due to darkness.
The rescue operation is being coordinated by an international team, supported by experienced international mountaineers and mountaineeresses. Dahlmeier's climbing partner survived by descending to base camp and signaling for help. Her death was officially confirmed by her management and local authorities.
Laura Dahlmeier, who was 31 years old, was not only known for her sporting achievements but also as a certified and experienced mountaineer. Born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, she had been in the region since late June with friends and had already successfully climbed the Great Trango Tower on July 8. The Laila Peak was her second planned summit goal.
Since her retirement, Dahlmeier had been active as a biathlon expert for the ZDF, alongside her mountain and climbing tours. The region where the accident occurred is known for attracting mountaineers every year, but the risks of avalanches and bad weather are high. The accident site is difficult to access and there is still a risk of rockslides.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Laura Dahlmeier during this difficult time. She will be remembered not only for her sporting success but also for her passion for mountaineering.
