Singapore Democratic Party Unveils Five-Year Plan for Electoral Reform and Grassroots Engagement

The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has launched a five-year plan called Roadmap2030, aimed at championing the rights and welfare of ordinary Singaporeans, promoting a more democratic and open political system, and offering credible alternative policy solutions.

The SDP, which has been active for 45 years, lost in all four constituencies it contested during the most recent General Election. However, the party has announced they will not "retreat." Instead, they are looking forward and focusing on the future with renewed determination.

Roadmap2030 revolves around five key goals and progresses through three distinct phases: Renew, Rebuild, and Reignite. The five goals, while not explicitly itemized, are implied to include electoral reform, enhanced civic education, revitalization of youth engagement, revitalization of women’s participation, and increased grassroots engagement.

The three phases correspond to a progressive sequence of Renew (internally reorganizing), Rebuild (strengthening community outreach and engagement), and Reignite (mobilizing support and campaign efforts toward the next General Election).

The SDP's headquarters are located in Bukit Batok. The party's deputy head of branding and communications, Shawal Yeo, is one of the younger SDP members working on Roadmap2030. Judy Tay, founder of a creative agency, and Xavier Tan, a medical student, are also part of this young team. Ariffin Sha, legal executive and founder of online media outlet Wake Up Singapore, is another younger SDP member involved in the road map and contested in the May General Election.

The objectives of Roadmap2030 also include building strong community engagement and trust, developing "future-ready" leadership, and attempting the "impossible," according to party chairman Paul Tambyah. The SDP's Roadmap2030 was unveiled at their 45th anniversary celebration.

The need for party organization prompted the creation of Roadmap2030, as stated by Mr Egan Hwan, coordinator of Roadmap2030. Dr Chee and Dr Tambyah did not present the four initiatives under the road map, instead delegating this task to the young SDP members who will also serve as project managers.

Post-GE2025, the SDP experienced a strong surge of support, leading to the realization of the need to continue this momentum. Despite their election losses, the SDP is determined to persevere and renew their efforts, as emphasized by their leadership. Roadmap2030 is a testament to their commitment to the Singaporean people and their aspirations for a more democratic and equitable nation.
