The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will be presenting a series of film screenings in Washington, D.C., offering the public a chance to delve into the rich tapestry of American history.

On Friday, January 14, a civil rights documentary titled "The Strange Demise of Jim Crow" will be screened. This documentary explores how many civil rights victories were won through behind-the-scenes negotiations and quiet discussions. The screening will take place at 7 P.M. on Friday, January 21.

On the same day, another documentary titled "The Congress" will be screened. This award-winning historical portrait, released in 1989, offers an overview of over 200 years of representational government.

In conjunction with the opening of the new Rotunda exhibition, "Treasures of Congress," the screening of Frank Capra's classic film, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," will also be held on Friday, January 21. The film tells the story of one idealistic man's fight against corruption and injustice, as portrayed by James Stewart in an unforgettable performance as Jefferson Smith, a junior senator. The film features remarkably realistic depictions of the Senate chambers and proceedings, and stars Jean Arthur, Thomas Mitchell, and Harry Carey.

On Friday, January 28, the documentary film "Oh Freedom After While" (1999) will be screened. Directed by avi avisar, this documentary documents a 1939 protest by Missouri sharecroppers and the establishment of a cooperative farming community called Cropperville.

All programs are free and open to the public. Free parking is available at the National Archives at College Park. For those with hearing impairments, specific information is available upon request. The times and dates of the screenings can be verified by calling the National Archives public events line.

The screenings will take place at the theater of the National Archives Building on Pennsylvania Avenue and at the auditorium of the National Archives at College Park, MD. NARA presents a 35mm print of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" courtesy of the Library of Congress.

On Friday, January 21, another screening of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) will also be held at the National Archives Theater. "Oh Freedom After While" focuses on the city of Houston, TX, and its peaceful desegregation of stores, lunch counters, and movie theaters.

These screenings offer a unique opportunity to engage with American history, and we encourage everyone to attend. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking for an interesting evening out, these screenings promise to be both educational and entertaining.
