The image shows a film strip with a black and white photo of a group of people in a cave, with the words "The Last of Us" written on it. The people in the photo appear to be in a state of distress, with some of them looking up in fear and others looking down in awe. The background of the photo is a deep, dark blue, and the text is written in a bold, white font.

Scream 8 takes a bold turn with new writers and director search underway

A new Scream film is on the way, with fresh talent taking the reins. After the success of Scream 7 in 2026, Spyglass Media quickly greenlit a follow-up. The franchise now moves forward with new writers and a search for a director.

The latest instalment will mark a creative shift, as original creator Kevin Williamson steps back to focus on other projects.

Scream 7 became a surprise horror hit in 2026, blending nostalgia, gore, and the series' signature self-aware style. Its strong box office performance led Spyglass Media to explore a sequel almost immediately.

Kevin Williamson, the mind behind the original *Scream*, initially considered returning to write—and possibly direct—*Scream 8*. He even developed ideas, including one suggested by franchise star Neve Campbell. However, he later chose not to return, leaving the project in new hands. The writing duties have now been handed to Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, known for their work on *Poker Face*, *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.*, and *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*. Their appointment signals a fresh direction for the franchise. It remains unclear whether they will build on Williamson and Campbell's concepts or craft an entirely new story. The search for a director is also underway. Christopher Landon, who helmed *Scream 7*, is unlikely to return, meaning the next film will have a different vision behind the camera.

With the Zuckerman sisters onboard and a new director to be named, Scream 8 is set to take the franchise in a different creative direction. Williamson's departure and the absence of Landon mean the next chapter will rely on fresh voices. Fans will have to wait to see how the series evolves under its new team.
