Scott Brown's tenure as Ayr United manager may be on the line following their Scottish Championship play-off elimination.

Speaking to BBC Sport Scotland, Brown said, "You can't win a game of football if you have 11 shots and don't hit the target. That's disappointing." He went on to criticize the lack of effort shown late in the game, stating, "They weren't even trying to win the game if I'm honest."

As tensions ran high, Brown accused the opposition of outsmarting his center-halves and exploiting them, while lamenting the team's poor finishing despite their overall dominance. "So, that's the thing that you're disappointed with because throughout the game, we were fine," he remarked.

Pointing out the need for improved mentality and desire from the players, Brown conceded accountability for the team's underwhelming performance in the final third. "If I'm honest, it comes down to mentality. It comes down to the willingness, the desire to go and win the game, and we weren't good enough," he admitted.

In the aftermath of the heartbreaking loss, Brown hinted that he might need to reassess his future at the club. "I've got to take a little bit of time to think about the game and the situation because watching that, that's not really my team," he stated.

The 39-year-old took up the reins at Ayr United in January 2024 and has led the club through 63 games so far. Despite the recent setback, the team has enjoyed a successful season, winning 18 league games while losing only nine.

Prior to joining Ayr United, Brown managed Fleetwood Town, but his tenure was cut short when he was sacked in September 2023 by the EFL club. Should Brown decide to move on, he could be in demand once again.
