Sizzling Weekend Ahead: Germany Braces for Scorching Heat

Surging temperatures ahead: anticipate highs reaching as high as 35 degrees - Scorching weather ahead: anticipated temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees.

Prepare for those sunnies and sunblock, Germany! The upcoming weekend is set to be a hot one, with temperatures soaring as high as 35 degrees! However, don't break out the flip-flops just yet - this mini heatwave will be short-lived, courtesy of the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach. By the weekend, the heatwave will be replaced by severe thunderstorms, so safety first!

But before the stormy weather sets in, get ready to sweat! Friday and Saturday will bring those sizzling temperatures accompanied by rising humidity, especially in the west. Expect the weather to feel suffocating. The DWD suggests scheduling larger outdoor activities either during the morning or late evening to beat the heat. In some cities in the Ruhr area, you might even need to tackle a couple of "tropical nights" with temperatures of at least 20 degrees, even after the sun goes down!

On Friday, Rügen Island will delight in balmy temperatures of up to 19 degrees, while the southwest will bake in scorching 35 degrees! Isolated thunderstorms are predicted to brew in the afternoon in the western and southwestern mountain ranges.

Saturday will start off sunny everywhere, with the east remaining dry. However, temperatures will max out at a sweltering 29 to 35 degrees in the north and east, and 25 to 30 degrees in the rest of the country. Be ready for thunderstorms in the west and southwest, as cumulus clouds will form early and bring heavy thunderstorms to some areas later in the day. Hold on tight for potential heavy rain with up to 40 liters per square meter and hail. That's not all – the rain could continue into the night, with several hours of heavy rain and amounts over 50 liters per square meter possible!

By Sunday, expect heavy showers and thunderstorms in parts of the southeastern region, with a risk of severe weather due to heavy rain. However, the northwest and west will see the rain clear up. The day will be sunny and dry only in the far east and southeast, otherwise, the sky will be cloudy. Temperatures will range from 20 degrees at the North Sea to up to 32 degrees at the Neiße.

Tidbits about Heat Waves:

  • Heat waves, like the one happening this weekend, are typically caused by persistent high-pressure systems and the Urban Heat Island Effect.
  • Global Warming is making heat waves more frequent and severe.
  • Prolonged heatwaves can pose significant health risks and affect ecosystems, especially marine organisms in the North Sea.
  • As the heatwave approaches, it's crucial to adhere to both community policy and energy policy to ensure safety and energy conservation during high-demand periods.
  • According to the science and environmental-science communities, the increasing frequency and severity of heatwaves, like the one anticipated this weekend, could be linked to global warming, emphasizing the need for long-term policies and solutions.
