Scorching temperatures prevailed in the southwest and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Germany Braces for Peak of Record-Breaking Heatwave
Germany is gearing up for the peak of a heatwave that is expected to reach temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius, with the highest forecast for Frankfurt. The heatwave, affecting nearly all federal states nationwide, is part of a larger regional pattern caused by a persistent high pressure ridge bringing hot air masses into Central Europe.
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the peak of the heatwave is yet to come. The expected peak temperatures for the current heatwave include 36 degrees for Berlin, Leipzig, and Nuremberg; 35 degrees for Stuttgart and Saarbrücken; 34 degrees for Cologne; and 31 degrees for Rostock. The cooler northern coastal area of Rostock is expected to be the least affected, with temperatures of 31 degrees.
The warmest regions during the peak are Frankfurt, where temperatures are forecast to reach 38 degrees, Berlin, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Saarbrücken, Cologne, and Rostock.
It's important to note that the temperatures reported are provisional and subject to change. The highest temperature recorded in Germany so far this year was 39.3°C in Andernach, Rhineland-Palatinate, but this was not the highest temperature record in Germany. The all-time record of 41.2°C was measured on July 25, 2019, at DWD weather stations in Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, both in North Rhine-Westphalia. This temperature was also not an all-time record for Germany, as it was not measured in July of the current year or in the Rhineland-Palatinate on Tuesday.
Rheinfelden in Rhineland-Palatinate recorded a temperature of 34.8°C on Tuesday, while Trier-Zewen in Rhineland-Palatinate had a temperature of 34.3°C on the same day. The DWD weather stations in Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, both in North Rhine-Westphalia, are also located in the region experiencing high temperatures.
After the heatwave peak, temperatures are expected to gradually cool down, especially in the northern areas by Friday. The DWD doesn't rule out temperatures reaching 39°C for Thursday, but the peak of the heatwave is expected on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the region.
