The Good Morning Duisburg newsletter, published by Radio Duisburg, is a popular morning news source for residents of Duisburg and surrounding areas in Germany. This week's edition offers a special feature on the upcoming Perseids meteor shower, providing valuable tips for capturing great photos of the celestial event.

The Perseids, an annual meteor shower, will reach its peak on the night of August 12th. To capture stunning images of these shooting stars, follow these steps:

  1. Preparation is Key: Set up your camera or smartphone on a tripod before dark, choosing a level spot with a clear view of the sky. Aim about 40° above the northeastern horizon, where meteor activity is prominent.
  2. Manual Camera Settings: Use manual mode with a long exposure (Manual or Bulb) and an ISO of 1600 or higher to capture faint meteors. Avoid autofocus and auto white balance to maintain control.
  3. Broad Sky Coverage: Compose your shot to cover a broad area of the sky, including some sky overhead, and add an interesting foreground element such as a tree or building to create an astro-landscape.
  4. Avoid the Radiant Point: Aim around 30–40° away from the Perseus constellation, the radiant point, to capture longer meteor trails that appear more dramatic.
  5. Avoid Bright Moonlight: Prevent overexposure and lens flare by avoiding the bright Moon in your frame, or shoot before moonrise if the Moon is bright. If moonlight illuminates the scene, expose for the foreground separately to add depth.

For smartphone users, apps or built-in manual camera modes that allow long exposure times, high ISO, and locked focus to infinity are essential. A smartphone tripod or stable surface is also necessary to avoid blur.

  1. Patience is Vital: Be patient and take many shots over a couple of hours, as meteor appearances are unpredictable, and patience improves your chances of capturing impressive meteors or fireballs.
  2. Post-Processing Techniques: After shooting, enhance photos by adjusting contrast or curves to darken the sky and brighten meteors and stars, helping the meteor streaks “pop” visually.

Shooting in RAW format can help preserve detail in the final image, and post-processing techniques such as adjusting brightness and contrast can further enhance the final image.

Using a smartphone app can also help track the location of meteors in the sky, making it easier to aim your camera. Remember, the Good Morning Duisburg newsletter may also include national and international news, making it a comprehensive morning news source.

So, on the night of August 12th, with these tips in hand, head outside and capture the magic of the Perseids meteor shower!
