Scorching temperatures anticipated in six Spanish regions on August 2nd, triggering extreme heat warnings.
A heatwave is expected to hit Spain starting this Sunday, August 3, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 45°C in parts of Andalusia and Extremadura. The heatwave is expected to last until at least August 10, with some uncertainty about immediate relief on Thursday, August 7.
Regions Affected
Most of Spain will be affected by the heatwave, with intense heat in Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Murcia, southern Galicia, and valleys along the Guadiana and Guadalquivir rivers. The Cantabrian coast and the Canary Islands are mostly excluded from this episode, with the Canary Islands not expected to meet heatwave criteria despite some warming.
Temperature Forecast
On Sunday, temperatures are expected to exceed 38 degrees quite generally in the southwest and south of Galicia, reaching 40-42 in the valleys of the Guadiana, Guadalquivir, and Tajo. On Monday, values close to 40°C will be registered again around the main depressions of the southern half of the peninsula, extending this day also to the lower basin of the Miño. On Tuesday, temperatures of 38-40°C could be reached or exceeded in low areas of the northern plateau and around the main depressions of the northeast and southeast of the peninsula.
Weather Pattern
Elsewhere, there will be an anticyclonic and sunny weather pattern. On Monday, temperature increases will continue, especially in the interior of the Cantabrian coast, with local notable values. On Tuesday, the 5th, high temperatures are expected in many areas, with maximum temperatures similar to or locally higher than those of Monday.
Rainfall and Storms
Rain, but generally weak, will affect the higher Canary Islands, northern Galicia, Cantabrian area, and northeast of Catalonia. Storms and showers will occur in the vicinity of the Central System, south of the Iberian Peninsula, and some points in Mallorca.
Alert Levels
A yellow alert has been issued in Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Madrid, and Aragon, and another for rain in Teruel. There is a yellow alert in Andalusia and Galicia due to strong waves and other coastal phenomena.
Sleeping Difficulties
Sleeping will be more difficult as nighttime temperatures will be significant in extensive areas of the center and south of the peninsula, as well as around the Mediterranean coast, with temperatures not dropping below 23-25 degrees.
The heatwave is expected to begin on Saturday across most of the country, with the most likely scenario being that temperatures will rise significantly again in parts of the northern third of the peninsula starting from Wednesday 6.
