Heatwave in Lower Saxony: Sky Turns Milky and Hazy

Lower Saxony, Germany, is currently experiencing a heatwave, and as a result, the sky has taken on a milky and hazy appearance. This phenomenon is primarily due to atmospheric conditions associated with heatwaves.

During heatwaves, warm temperatures can cause the air to hold more moisture and trap pollutants closer to the ground, leading to a kind of visible haze. The haze scatters the shorter wavelengths of sunlight less effectively, washing out the blue sky and making it look milky or less vibrant.

The increased airborne particles, higher humidity levels, and thermal gradients are common causes of this effect. The particles could be dust or pollution raised or retained by the heat, while the higher humidity levels cause water vapor to scatter light, and thermal gradients cause light to refract and scatter abnormally.

The German Weather Service has issued a warning about forest fires, particularly in the east of the country on August 15. The temperatures in Lower Saxony could reach up to 32 degrees during the day, and it will be particularly hot in urban areas, with temperatures up to 25 degrees even at night. However, towards the end of August, it could rain again, and the weather will gradually cool down by up to ten degrees.

Despite the heat, Lower Saxony's weather remains milder compared to other parts of Germany. On Thursday, the weather promises plenty of sunshine, and it will be dry for now, with only individual thunderstorms and showers in the south of Germany at the weekend.

Caution is advised in Lower Saxony at a danger level of three due to the weather. The Saharan dust is being carried north by the warm air masses, giving the region a genuine desert feel. The heatwave is expected to continue in the coming days, but from the weekend onwards, the weather will become noticeably more pleasant, according to meteorologist Dominik Jung.
