Scorching August temperatures soar nearly to 40 degrees nationwide in our country
August 2025 Heatwave Grips Europe, Asia, and America
A significant heatwave, possibly the last of the year, has taken hold across Europe, Asia, North Africa, and parts of North America. The heatwave, expected to continue through mid-August, is primarily due to the development of a strong "heat dome," a high-pressure system that traps hot air and prevents it from dissipating.
The heat dome has resulted in prolonged, intense heat affecting vast regions, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in many areas. Some regions, such as Spain, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, and parts of the Middle East, have even seen temperatures exceed 45°C.
Affected Areas
Much of southern, central, and western Europe, including France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the UK, and the Balkans, have been hit hard by the heatwave. Nordic countries, including Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of the Arctic Circle, have also experienced unprecedented heat above 30°C. West Asia and southern Central Asia, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Pakistan, have also been affected. North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and parts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico have also felt the heat.
Expected Duration
The heatwave is expected to be long-lasting, with the heat dome remaining strong over Europe and expanding eastward into Central and Eastern Europe. This prolonged heat increases the risk of wildfires, droughts, and health issues, particularly among vulnerable populations like older adults and young children.
Wildfires have already broken out in Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Canada, fueled by the extreme heat, causing casualties and degrading air quality. Heat-related deaths and health stresses have also been significant, especially in Europe.
Temperature and Weather Changes
After August 19, cooler temperatures are expected in some areas due to the reassertion of a low-pressure system. The south is expected to remain relatively warm, with temperatures around 27°C. Along the coasts, temperatures could drop to as low as 17°C, with increased rainfall.
Strenuous physical activities should be scheduled for the evenings to avoid heat exhaustion. Adequate UV protection is essential during this heatwave.
Coping with the Heatwave
The August heatwave is particularly challenging for the elderly and young children. It's crucial to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned environments, and checking on neighbours and family members who may be at risk.
As the heatwave continues, summer may gradually come to an end, bringing relief to many affected regions. However, it's essential to remain vigilant and prepared, as the prolonged heat and subsequent cooler temperatures can pose risks to health and safety.
