Exploring Ocean Depths Unveils Mysteries

Venturing into the heart of the southern Pacific Ocean, a team of explorers has allegedly unearthed around twenty species never seen before. The Schmidt Ocean Institute disclosed their discovery of a live Promachoteuthis squid, marking a significant breakthrough in research. Additionally, an uncharted underwater mountain, standing tall at over 3 kilometers, was identified and studied. This grand mountain is home to a vibrant deep-sea habitat.

During this extraordinary voyage, a Casper squid surfaced, marking the first sighting of the species in the southern Pacific, as emphasized by a marine research organization. Alongside this, two elusive Bathyphysa jellyfish, commonly referred to as "flying spaghetti monsters," were observed gracefully swimming in the depths of the ocean.

Peculiar sea cucumbers and starfish

Equipped with an automated underwater vehicle, researchers delved into an approximately 800 square meter area brimming with odd deep-sea corals and teeming with fascinating inhabitants like rockfish, starfish, and colossal king crabs. Striking images of an unusual type of sea cucumbers, known as Chaunacops, were also captured.

The undiscovered underwater mountains of the southeastern Pacific reveal a staggering variety of unique species unable to be found anywhere else, the team declared.

Investigating the infamous Chile Ridge

Under the guidance of oceanographers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute, a team investigated a part of the Chile Ridge, a deep-sea mountain range formed at the edge of two separating tectonic plates. Their discovery highlights the incredible biodiversity that inhabits these underwater ecosystems, said Tomer Ketter from the Schmidt Ocean Institute.

The strange sea cucumbers and starfish found in the explored area are peculiar inhabitants of the diverse ecosystem thriving in the undiscovered underwater mountains. This ecosystem, rich with life, is unique to the southeastern Pacific and is home to numerous species not found anywhere else.
