In a heartwarming ceremony in the city hall, German film director Andreas Dresen, 61, was bestowed the title of Honorary Citizen of Schwerin. Congratulating him was Mayor of Schwerin, Rico Badenschier from the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

According to records, Dresen is the 20th individual to receive this prestigious recognition since 1845. Aviation pioneer Ludwig Bölkow, flower seller Bertha Klingberg, and Rabbi William Wolff are among the illustrious company now joined by Dresen.

Mayor Badenschier lauded Andreas Dresen as a highly influential filmmaker in 30 years of German cinema, stating, "As an East German artist, Andreas Dresen paints pictures that embody the ambiguity of modern Germany, bridging its past and present, and breaking polarizations." Such perspectives are crucial in a democracy, as they help cultivate understanding and self-assessment, which are more vital than ever today.

Throughout his prolific career, Dresen has nabbed awards at renowned film festivals such as Cannes, Chicago, and Karlovy Vary, and has been awarded the prestigious German Film Prize on multiple occasions, for films like "Halbe Treppe," "Wolke Neun," "Halt auf freier Strecke," and "Gundermann." Despite his triumphs, Dresen cherishes his deep connection to Schwerin.

Born in Gera in 1963, Dresen shares a strong bond with Schwerin. His mother, an actress, and his theater director father separated during his childhood, and his mother moved to Schwerin with him. He was greatly influenced by Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater's then-director, Christoph Schroth, who became a father figure for him.

Schwerin, during Dresen's formative years, boasted a "crazy talented ensemble" that was renowned throughout the German Democratic Republic (DDR). This outstanding artistic environment left a profound impact on Dresen, inspiring him to witness the power of art and what it can achieve.
