Woohoo! Schwerin's Residenzensemble Honored with UNESCO World Heritage Site Award! 🎉
- Schwerin granted UNESCO World Heritage status
Get your popcorn ready, folks! The crown jewel of Schwerin, our state capital, is about to receive a well-deserved accolade. On Monday, at 6:00 PM sharp, Stefan Roessel, the big cheese from the Federal Foreign Office's Cultural Affairs Commission, will hand over the UNESCO World Heritage Site certificate to the Residenzensemble! And guess who'll be there to celebrate this historic moment? Our very own Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD), Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD), and Birgit Hesse, President of the State Parliament.
Last July, UNESCO officially inscribed this illustrious ensemble, boasting more than 30 architectural wonders nestled in the city center, on the World Heritage List. The heart of this ensemble? You guessed it – the castle! The announcement came during UNESCO's 46th session held in New Delhi, India, where our very own Schwerin joined the likes of Machu Picchu in Peru, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Acropolis of Athens. Germany now boasts an impressive 53 World Heritage Sites to its name.
What's So Special About the Residenzensemble?
Schwerin's Residenzensemble is a mesmerizing blend of architectural styles, showcasing the evolution of courtly life and the romantic aesthetic of the 19th century. Notable elements include:
