Anti-Semitism Persists in Germany, Leaving Josef Schuster Disappointed

The Central Council of Jews in Germany remains cautious about the future of anti-Semitic hate and hostility, with President Josef Schuster conceding that a life free of this prejudice might not be within reach. In an interview with dpa, Schuster noted his realization that despite his efforts, anti-Semitic sentiments have only grown louder rather than disappearing altogether.

Schuster's comments also echo the sentiments shared by his predecessor, Ignatz Bubis, who expressed frustration at having achieved little in his nine-year term as Central Council President. Bubis recognized that anti-Semitic incidents in Germany have only increased over the years, a trend that Schuster predicts will continue in the next five years, despite the surge in anti-Semitic attacks following the Hamas-led attack on Israel.

The Central Council President further expressed his disappointment at the absence of solidarity towards Jewish Germans from the broader society. While political leaders across parties have consistently shown empathy and unwavering support for Israel, Schuster remains adamant that there should be a more tangible demonstration of support from the general public.

Surveys indicate that around one-fifth of the German population harbors anti-Jewish sentiments, though thankfully, this rate has not increased significantly over the years. The Jewish Community Day ended in Berlin on a somber note, with Schuster highlighting the significance of solidarity in combating anti-Semitism and promoting unity.
