"Schulz's Final Act in Düsseldorf Theater": Referring to the last season of Schulz in the Düsseldorf Theater
The Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, located in an office building towers with its glass bridge foyer, is gearing up for an exciting new season. Current Generalintendant, Wilfried Schulz, has announced that the next season will be his last, marking a new era for the playhouse [1].
Starting in 2026, Andreas Karlaganis will take over as the new Generalintendant. He will be the chief executive and artistic leader of the theater, bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to the table.
One of the highlights of the upcoming season is the dramatization of "Blizzard" by Vladimir Sorokin. Directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, the Russian winter drama tells a compelling story about a doctor, a coachman, and the force of nature. August Diehl will play the lead role of Doctor Garin in this production, which will be performed at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus from September 12 [2].
The 2025/26 season program is a thick, beautiful picture book called "The Power of Art". Illustrated by Thomas Rabsch, the purple book is richly illustrated with original actor portraits and has 166 pages. It will be distributed free of charge at the box office and in the foyer of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus [3].
In addition to "Blizzard", the season will also feature a variety of other productions. Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" will be performed at the main house, directed by Bernadette Sonnenbichler before she leaves to become artistic director in Heidelberg. "The Door" by Gregory Caers will be a great fun for the very young, while "1984" by George Orwell will be discussed [4].
The program for the Young Acting and the City:Collective starts on September 19 with "Timm Thaler or The Sold Laugh" by James Krüss. Fabiola Kuonen will direct "The Raft of the Medusa", a tragedy about the survival struggle of 13 shipwrecked children. "Emil and the Three Twins" will have its premiere for Christmas in the large house, and "The Green Kingdom" by Cornelia Funke will have its premiere before "NEINhorn" with music by Matts Johan Leenders [5].
The Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus is also committed to offering a variety of activities beyond the stage. Every Wednesday from 5 pm, there will be alternating dance and yoga in the open foyer. On select occasions, there will be theater clubs, clothing exchange, disco parties, and open training [6]. Once a month, everyone will sing together for free: "Move it! Sing it!" [7].
The Central, located next to the main station, will become a "creative power center" in a challenging environment. It will be the shared home for the Young Acting and the City:Collective, led by Birgit Lengers. The Central will host a variety of events, including Effi Biest's regular queer party: "Drag & Biest" [8].
Laura Naumann is still looking for musical and female socialized people aged 25 and over for a "Chekhov Fantasy in the Present" ("Three Sisters") [9]. Stefan Fischer-Fels will continue as the director of the young acting after the change of intendant [10].
The claim of the 2025/26 season program is "Dignity and Freedom". With its diverse lineup of productions and activities, the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus is poised to deliver on this promise and offer a season that is both thought-provoking and entertaining.
