Schools and colleges in Punjab temporarily shut down for a period of three days due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Punjab, a state with a 532-km border with Pakistan, is preparing for potential threats. Schools are closed in border districts, and police leaves have been canceled.

The Heat Is On

As of mid-May 2025, Indo-Pak tensions have reached a boiling point. Pakistan termed India's recent missile-strike campaign an "act of war," vowing a substantial response [1][2]. The conflict has claimed lives on both sides, with Pakistan reporting the killing of 40-50 Indian soldiers [1]. The situation remains volatile, with both nations braced for further escalations.

Alert in Punjab

Punjab is in alert mode, with urgent security measures being implemented. All police personnel have been ordered to stay on duty, with exceptionally approved leaves granted only in emergencies. Schools in six border districts, namely Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran, are shut until further notice as a precautionary measure [4].

Moreover, a nightly blackout is imposed in Gurdaspur district, lasting from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM daily, in accordance with the Civil Defence Act, 1968 [5]. Similarly, neighboring states, such as Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan, are also tightening security as part of preparations for potential conflict [3][4].
