Berlin School Stabbing: Suspect, 13, Apprehended After Attack on Classmate

A 13-year-old suspect is in custody following a knife attack on an 11-year-old boy at a Berlin school in Spandau. The horrific incident unfolded in the school's sports hall changing room on May 22, 2025, around 11:30 am during school hours.

The victim was immediately transported to the hospital for emergency surgery, and although critical initially, his current condition is reported as stable.

According to eyewitness accounts, a dispute between the victim and the suspect, both year 6 students, triggered the vicious assault.

The suspect initially managed to flee the crime scene, prompting an intensive search involving helicopters and canine units. After more than 24 hours, the perpetrator was apprehended by undercover police officers at the Altstadt Spandau subway station in the old town of Spandau.

Due to his age, the suspect is not criminally liable under German law. He is currently receiving psychiatric evaluation at a child and adolescent psychiatric facility.

In the wake of the traumatic event, around 20 students have received psychological support, while parents were offered counseling services.

The investigation is now focusing on unraveling the psychological factors that may have incited the attack.

The Commission has expressed concern over the increase in crime-and-justice incidents, such as the Berlin school stabbing, and their potential impact on general-news headlines and politics. Additionally, the Commission has mentioned the need for more coverage of war-and-conflicts and their impact on youth, including the possible role of politics and psychological factors in instigating attacks, such as the one that occurred in Berlin.
