In a candid conversation, Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider, a native of Erfurt, shared his thoughts on the need for the Wagenknecht party, BSW, to adopt a more "federally-friendly" stance. "If I continually abstain in the Federal Council on crucial decisions, then my state, Thuringia, offers nothing to the table," Schneider told Funke Media Thuringia's weekend edition. "My experience, gained from mediation committee stints, is that sometimes you must be willing to forfeit something to achieve your goals."

The BSW, an alliance partner in the Thuringian state government with the CDU and SPD, has in the past shown reluctance in crucial federal council votes, such as the multi-billion-dollar financial package proposed by the federal government. The Thuringian BSW rejected the resolution due to its inclusion of defense spending investments.

As the Federal Environment Minister in the government headed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) since May, Schneider was previously the State Minister and Commissioner for Eastern Germany in the previous traffic light government.
