A Fresh Spin on Daniela Schmitt Leading the FDP's Charge for the State Election
FDP Steers Towards State Election with Schmitt in Command - Schmitt assumes leadership role within FDP party
Get ready to rumble! Rhineland-Palatinate's fearless Lib Dem leader, Daniela Schmitt, has secured the top spot for the FDP in the upcoming state election on March 22, 2026. With the party's state delegates assembly in Speyer, Schmitt received a whopping 78% of the votes – 151 out of 193 – to become the front-runner. Her bid was approved with flying colors, as she had no competing candidates and went unopposed.
In typical Schmitt style, she didn't back away from the challenge. In her inspiring speech, she advocated for a progressive educational system and a boosted construction industry to build, build, build – so that every Rhinelander's dream home becomes a reality. The FDP isn't shy about offering up courageous, fresh solutions to propel our state forward.
Christian Dürr, the national FDP leader, rallied the Rhineland-Palatinate Liberal troops nine months before the election. He reminded them, "We've had setbacks, but we bounce back because we're conviction actors." Dürr spotlighted the FDP's impact on German pharma giant Biontech during the pandemic, shaking things up and making things happen.
Fellow contenders Philipp Fernis and Steven Wink followed close behind, capturing the second and third spots, respectively. They, too, secured their positions without any competitor standing in the way. Candidates continued to fill out the rest of the list in a harmonious assembly. Party veterans threw a celebratory hat tip to former state chairman Rainer Brüdler on his 80th birthday.
Schmitt's rise to power started in April when she became the state chairwoman, ousting Volker Wissing following internal strife within the party. Being no stranger to the FDP scene, Schmitt served as deputy state chairwoman and a member of the federal executive board.
Controversy followed Schmitt's candidacy, with critics questioning her profile and doubting her record. Allegations arose regarding support her husband received from the state-owned promotional bank and his presence on ministry delegation trips. Schmitt vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that there was no misconduct.
Despite the FDP's hardships in recent elections, the party is currently part of the governing coalition in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt. The upcoming election will decide whether the Lib Dems remain in power or find themselves on the sidelines.
Schmitt formerly held the state secretary position for economics, and in 2020, she was announced as the FDP's top candidate for the 2021 state election with 95.2% of the votes. Although the party only secured 5.5% that year, Schmitt’s resilience and spirit continue to echo throughout the party as it refocuses and rebuilds ahead of the 2026 state election.
