Meet Dorit Stenke: The Fresh Face in Schleswig-Holstein's Ministry of Education

Schleswig-Holstein appoints Steinke as its latest Minister of Education. - Schleswig-Holstein welcomes Stenke as its freshly appointed Minister of Education.

Hey there! The education scene in Schleswig-Holstein just got heated up with a fresh face taking over the Ministry of Education. Pedagogue Dorit Stenke has stepped into the hot seat, replacing Karin Prien (CDU), who's moved to Berlin.

You heard it right! The ministry's new boss is none other than the seasoned pedagogue Dorit Stenke. According to Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU), Stenke is a fitting successor. Günther stated, "She's been working behind the scenes for years, shaping education policy here in Schleswig-Holstein as State Secretary since 2017."

Stenke has made it clear she intends to keep the pedagogical ball rolling, stressing the importance of maintaining consistency. "I think it's critical we convey to students and teachers in our state that we have a coherent vision of education policy," she said.

When quizzed about differences with her predecessor, Stenke mentioned that she approaches dialogue differently due to her academic background in education. Günther insists that Stenke will have a smooth transition, saying, "I'm looking forward to working alongside her and tackling the challenges together."

So why is Prien packing her bags for Berlin? Turns out, she's joined the federal government as Federal Minister of Education. Günther recruited the Hamburg native with a plum offer of a job guarantee back in 2017.

Stenke has been silently working her magic in Schleswig-Holstein's education system for years. With a doctorate in pedagogy, she's chaired the Saxon Education Institute and held top roles in the state's Ministry of School and Vocational Education.

The SPD parliamentary group leader, Serpil Midyatli, says the new minister is joining under tough conditions, as education policy in the state has been a mess for years, lagging behind in most education rankings. "It's essential Stenke shows the courage to do things differently," Midyatli added.

FDP parliamentary group leader Christopher Vogt praised Stenke as an education expert, but lamented the missed opportunity for a fresh start in education policy.

Jette Waldinger-Thiering of the SSW applauded Stenke for her pragmatic approach, saying she understands the urgent issues plaguing the education sector and institutions of minorities in cultural policy. The Education and Science Trade Union Chairperson, Kerstin Quellmann, praised Stenke's educational understanding, adding the education sector needs more funding, especially for universities.

Stenke's promotion comes with a few changes in the cabinet. Tobias von der Heide (CDU), the current Transport State Secretary, is poised to replace Stenke in the Ministry of Transport, once that succession is sorted. Meanwhile, Olaf Tauras (CDU), former mayor of Neumünster, will take over as State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Health, succeeding Oliver Grundei, who resigned for family reasons.
