Touring Schleswig-Holstein Over Christmas and New Year's Eve

The holiday season is once again a time of bustling travel, and Schleswig-Holstein is no exception. With beautiful coastlines along the Baltic and North Seas, this northern German state tops the list of travel destinations for many during Christmas and New Year's Eve, according to Bettina Bunge from TASH (Schleswig-Holstein Tourism Agency).

Varying Booking Scenarios

While Christmas and New Year's Eve are popular times to visit Schleswig-Holstein, the booking situation varies across its regions. The state's more significant destinations present occupancy rates of up to 80%, but the hustle and bustle continue into the New Year. Surprisingly, some vacation spots have surpassed last year's results, signaling a strong demand for Schleswig-Holstein's holiday spirit. Despite the high demand, there's still room for last-minute vacationers between the coasts and in various categories and price ranges.

North Sea Island Appeal

While the enchantment of the Halligen Islands has nearly filled up for Christmas and New Year's Eve, there might still be opportunities for those who book late. Nordstrand, one of the island's praised gems, has around 10% of its accommodations left available. On the other side, the North Frisian islands of Amrum, Föhr, and Sylt enjoy occupancy rates similar to previous seasons, but with an 80% booked rate around Christmas and New Year's Eve. Visitors seeking lodging for Sylt's traditional New Year's Eve celebration still have options across the island.

Coastal Beauty

Lübeck-Travemünde boasts a 98% occupancy rate for New Year's Eve and an 80% occupancy rate for Christmas. The Bay of Lübeck's resorts also enjoy an almost comparable 80% occupancy rate, with more bookings expected ahead of the holiday season. Grömitz, known for its stunning Bay of Lübeck view, is already 85% occupied, but its Tourist Service expects a thriving turnout for the New Year.

Inland Opportunities

For those looking for less crowded holiday experiences, the inland areas might be a better option. The Schlei region and the green inland region boast an uptick in bookings this year, with a wide range of accommodations available in all categories. Holstein, Elbe, and Auenland offer desirable capacity for those seizing the opportunity to explore inland destinations.

Spring Bookings Still Slow

While the holiday season figures are positive, bookings for spring are still minimal in most locations. With Easter just around the corner, expect last-minute bookings due to unpredictable weather conditions as families favor accessible accommodations with a minimum stay of 5 days.

If you're planning a holiday to Schleswig-Holstein, consider the enchantment of Kiel, Westerland, and Sylt along the coasts or the historical charm of Wedel and Schleswig inland. Don't forget the Hamburg Yachting Marina and Hundestrand in Wedel, romantically illuminated under the festive lighting.
