The 70th Bottroper Tennis City Championships Kickoff: A Three-Week Tennis Festival 🎾🇩🇪
Scheduled at TC Waldhof on Saturday: 444 registrants for the Tennis City Championships
Get ready, tennis fans! The 70th Bottroper Tennis City Championships are upon us, starting this very Saturday, June 28th. Prepare for a whopping 39 tournaments, running all the way through July 20th. From young gunners U10 to seasoned Men's 70, the TC Waldhof is all set to host the event.
Werner Hüsken, head of the local tennis scene, shared his satisfaction during the draw ceremony. Despite the challenges this year, a total of 444 registrations were received, with 333 in the adult category and 111 for the youth competitions.
The Silent Battle Behind the Scenes
The challenges Hüsken referred to stemmed from the German Tennis Federation's (DTB) decision to introduce a tournament player license, accompanied by an annual fee of 20 euros, for collecting LK points. A survey among active players last year suggested that running the traditional tournament without LK evaluation would result in significant participant losses, equal to those when requiring the new tournament player license.
"This would have meant an additional cost of around 40 euros for many participants, possibly with an early exit," Hüsken explained. The club representatives unanimously decided against requiring the tournament player license and the popular LK evaluation, acknowledging it as a disaster for traditional tournaments like the Bottroper Tennis City Championships.
World Champions and Challengers Galore
The popularity of the tournament is evident not only in the registration numbers but also in the participant lists. The open men's class sees the entry of world champion Kim Möllers, with last year's finalist Jan Mirau being his main contender. In the women's category, defending champion Lisa Schmitke faces tough competition from Lara Stanzek and Paulina Loipfinger. Many high-caliber players are listed in the age groups.
