Schattenburg Castle Opens Doors to Visitors, Showcasing Vorarlberg's Rich History
Schattenburg Castle, a historic gem in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg, opens its doors to visitors. This well-preserved medieval fortress, dating back to around 1200, offers a glimpse into the region's rich history and houses the largest local history museum in Vorarlberg.
The castle, once the ancestral seat of the Counts of Montfort, boasts 18 exhibition rooms. These include an ancient castle chapel, a traditional costume chamber, and an extensive arms collection. Among the prominent figures associated with the castle is Graf Hugo von Montfort, a notable poet and politician of the 14th century. Later, the castle was owned by the Princes of Liechtenstein.
Visitors can explore the castle's fascinating history through its current special exhibition, 'Of Innkeepers and Taverns', running until February 2026. The museum offers a 15-minute walk from Feldkirch's main train station and has 74 paid parking spaces. Admission is €8 for adults, with discounts for various groups.
