FC Schalke 04 Kick Off Second Division Campaign with Victory Over Hertha BSC

The 2024-25 Second Division season opener between FC Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC was a highly anticipated clash between two traditional German clubs, both seeking a return to the Bundesliga's top tier after their 2023 relegation.

Schalke, who finished in 14th place last season and ended with a six-game losing streak, are under new management with Miron Muslic aiming to stabilize the team. Hertha Berlin, also relegated in 2023, had a late-season managerial boost under Stefan Leitl, halting a steep decline, but still failed to challenge seriously for promotion.

The match at Schalke's VELTINS-Arena was a competitive fixture, with both sides eager to set a positive tone after challenging campaigns. Schalke's home advantage and historical head-to-head dominance balanced Hertha's slightly better recent form and scoring consistency.

From the first minute, Schalke played with high intensity, pleasing their passionate fans. This intensity paid off in the 16th minute when Moussa Sylla scored the opening goal, assisted by Peter Remmert. Schalke's captain, Kenan Karaman, had stated before the game that it was a new chance for the team to make amends for many things, and they delivered on his words.

Hertha, however, found no way through Schalke's compact defense in the second half. Fabian Reese and Dawid Kownacki started for Hertha's offense, but they struggled to create chances against a resilient Schalke defense.

Schalke's second goal came in the 23rd minute when Nikola Katic scored from a corner. Despite being less energetic and intense in the second half compared to the first, Schalke managed to maintain their lead until the 89th minute when Sebastian Groening scored for Hertha. However, it came too late to change the outcome of the match.

The match was played in front of 62,083 spectators in the sold-out Veltins Arena. Nikola Katic was shown a red card in the 90+8th minute, but it did not affect the final result as Schalke started the new Second Division season with a 2:1 victory over Hertha BSC.

Tjark Ernst, Hertha's goalkeeper, made a save to prevent Sylla from scoring a second goal in the first half. Schalke ended the preseason with some attacking promise, scoring five goals in the last two warm-up games. Hertha, on the other hand, has been more consistent in scoring, failing to find the net only twice in their last 14 games.

Both clubs' promotion ambitions hinge on stabilizing form under relatively new management. Schalke aims to end their second-tier tenure and regain Bundesliga status, while Hertha are also motivated to regain Bundesliga status but face similar challenges of inconsistency and limited scoring prowess. The first match of the season suggests that both teams still have work to do to address these issues and return to the top tier of German football.

The Commission, assisted by the European Parliament and the Council, is preparing the annual report on the implementation of the sports programme, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to boost the performance of European football leagues, including the Second Division, where FC Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC are participating in the 2024-25 season.

Undeterred by their late 2023 relegation, both clubs are striving for a return to the Bundesliga's top tier, with Schalke aiming to end their second-tier tenure and Hertha equally motivated to regain their position in the prestigious league.
