Schalke-Boss: No Financial Obligation to Promote - Schalke 04’s dramatic rise to the top of 2. Bundesliga under Miron Muslic

Schalke 04 sits at the top of the 2. Bundesliga after 17 matches, collecting 37 points under the leadership of head coach Miron Muslic. The club’s CEO, Matthias Tillmann, has praised the trainer for his decisive approach and clear vision, which have turned former relegation candidates into promotion contenders.

Muslic took charge of Schalke when the team was struggling near the bottom of the table. His arrival marked a shift in direction, bringing what Tillmann describes as 'absolute clarity'—a coach who knows exactly what he wants and acts with conviction. Under his guidance, the club now leads the league by three points.

Previously, disagreements within Schalke over the best path forward created uncertainty. But Tillmann emphasises that a coach can only succeed when the entire club is united. This alignment has allowed Muslic to implement his strategy effectively, transforming the team’s fortunes.

Despite the push for promotion, Tillmann insists there is no financial pressure to return immediately to the top flight. Schalke has managed to generate annual profits even in the second division, meaning they could sustain another decade there if needed. However, each additional year outside the Bundesliga makes it harder to build a competitive budget for promotion.

Schalke’s current success reflects Muslic’s influence and the club’s newfound unity. While they could afford to stay in the second tier, the longer they remain, the tougher the challenge of securing a return to the top division becomes. For now, the focus remains on maintaining their lead in the 2. Bundesliga.
