English Left-Back Derry John Murkin Chooses Return to Netherlands with FC Utrecht

Gelsenkirchen, Germany —

After two fruitful seasons at FC Schalke 04, Derry John Murkin is making a comeback to Dutch football, joining FC Utrecht. The move, expected to take place in late May 2025, concludes the English left-back's tenure with Schalke, where he proved himself as a prominent player after joining from FC Volendam in 2023.

The financial details of the transfer remain undisclosed, with varying reports suggesting a base fee of €1.2 million, potentially rising to €1.5 million with bonuses. Schalke's Sporting Director, Youri Mulder, commented on the deal, stating that the economic conditions were favorable for the club given Murkin's age, contract duration, and market value.

Murkin showcased a notable impact at Schalke, making 54 second-division appearances, scoring once, and providing nine assists. Although his contract with Schalke was set to end in 2026, a swift transfer agreement with Utrecht prompted his early departure.

"I am grateful to the fans, staff, teammates, and the club for their unwavering support during my time at Schalke. This period has been a privilege," expressed Murkin via Instagram, bidding farewell to Schalke's supporters.

Utrecht's pursuit of Murkin is motivated by the anticipated exit of their current left-back, Souffian El Karouani, who is being courted by other clubs, including PSV. As a key player in Schalke's defense, Murkin's potential and consistent performances earned him a coveted spot on Utrecht's roster.

In an interview, Schalke's Director of Professional, Youri Mulder, underscored Murkin's readiness to compete at the highest level nationally and internationally, hinting at Utrecht’s participation in the Europa League.

Murkin is looking forward to a new chapter with FC Utrecht, culminating in a significant step in his career, positioning him for a key role at a club with European ambitions.

The English left-back Derry John Murkin is returning to his roots, choosing to join an institution within his place of residence, FC Utrecht, in the Netherlands. As a skilled player with experience in European-leagues such as the premier-league (during his time at FC Schalke 04), Murkin is poised to contribute to Utrecht's sports scene, specifically in the realm of football.
