Schaffhausen Approves Bold Redevelopment of Former Home Depot Site

A major redevelopment project has been given the green light in Schaffhausen. The City Council approved a private neighbourhood plan for the former homedepot site on Hochstrasse. The 5,788-square-metre area, located between the Old Town and Swissbild/Herblingen districts, will now be transformed into a mix of housing and public spaces.

The site’s future was shaped by a design competition organised by Klaiber Immobilien AG, the hereditary building rights holder, together with the city’s urban planning department. The winning proposal, Im Werk, came from Schwabe Suter Architekten GmbH (now UNIK Architektur AG) and Bergland GmbH. Their design forms the basis of the newly approved plan.

The former homedepot site will now become a mix of premium housing and community facilities. Public spaces, preserved historic buildings, and a new neighbourhood hub are set to reshape the area. Work will proceed under hereditary building rights, ensuring long-term development in line with the city’s vision.
