In the deserted, once-thriving village of Old Bützenich, a security force maintains surveillance during the night as the houses and church make way for a mining operation. But despite the energy transition's optimism, the old village community has long disintegrated due to the move to New Bützenich.
When news of his broken-into house reaches Dr. Christian Franzen, the local doctor, he ventures forth, never to return—leading his wife, Betje, to the police. Her husband is found—murdered, in the old village. While the townspeople may have seen him as their physician, he was not widely loved. As police detective Max Ballauf and his partner Freddy Schenk dig deeper, they unearth a fractured community unwilling and unable to move past the turmoil of its past.
While Schenk heads back to Cologne each evening, Ballauf forges a friendship with former pension owner Karin Bongartz who regales him with tales of the old village and the stark changes in rural living close to Cologne.
