Hoodwinked Celebs, Betrayal, and Intrigue: Unraveling the Third Season of "Traitor"

You'd be surprised by the shared traits between contemporary TV networks and religious institutions - both can be the setting for a cloak-and-dagger game. The Vatican and RTL are hiding something in common, though it's not the inspiration of a divine authority. Instead, they're locked in a high-stakes contest of political wit, far removed from their usual spheres.

"The Traitor - Trust No One" makes its comeback on April 29, 8:15 PM on RTL, with season 3. Think of it as a jaw-dropping convergence of real-life characters and ruthless deception. In this twisted reality, celebrities are lured into a labyrinthine castle, where the name of the game is backstabbing and cunning. But don't fret, no real celeb lives are on the line - this drama's only as deadly as the games allow.

Back in 2024, season 1 of this thrilling series bagged the German Television Award, sending expectations through the roof for season 3, whose grandeur matches the tale's Pharaonic setting. Picture a suspenseful Agatha Christie novel on one hand and a lighter rendition of "Game of Thrones" on the other, and you're almost there.

Here's the lowdown on the game and the intriguing thoughts of our on-screen daredevils.

The Gameplay

If you're a stranger to the first two seasons, don't fret. It's simply a riveting masterclass in tense paranoia - a game night you would never want to come out of. Seasoned host Sonja Zietlow is the mastermind behind the deceitful selection. She secretly picks a coterie of "traitors" from 16 unsuspecting celebrities. The only ones knowing their wicked roles are the audience and the traitors themselves. The group must identify who among them is a deceiver.

Behind closed doors, the traitors can eliminate their co-players. However, they must tread carefully lest they raise suspicion. The moment all contestants gather for an assembly, they vote out their prime suspects, sending them packing from the castle gates. A hefty cash prize of 50,000 euros awaits the winner.

The Allure

Juliane Werding once serenaded the world with 'If you think you think, then you only think you think.' The third season of "The Traitor" operates on the same principle. It's an endless dance of trying to predict whether the stranger across the table suspects you're a traitor, if they think you think they're a traitor, or any other mental gymnastics you can conjure. Welcome to the mind-bending maze.

One unique selling point of the show is that, despite the "reality TV" label, it has little to do with the genre's cliches - the inevitable bickering, cringe, and long wait for the steamy scenes.

"The arguing is definitely there," says moderator Sonja Zietlow (56) to the German Press Agency. "But it's on a whole new level. The game is the focus. And before you know it, you're questioning everything you thought you knew about the contestants."

Take Joachim Llambi, for instance. Llambi is known for his distinctly accented speech, but is he a cunning traitor or an innocent victim? Or maybe Motsi Mabuse, who always radiates positivity and a slightly absent-minded air. Could she possibly have what it takes to play the ruthless traitor we've been anticipating? All will be revealed.

The New Cast

The third season of "The Traitor" boasts a star-studded roster, including some familiar faces from RTL's dance format "Let's Dance". Joining the fray are:

  • The entire jury of "Let's Dance": Mabuse, Llambi, Jorge González, and more.
  • Journalist Jan Hofer, once the stoic news anchor of "Tagesschau", finds himself in a whole new world of deception and lies, not exactly his usual cup of tea.
  • Fashion influencer Joe Laschet, the politically experienced son of Armin Laschet, tackles his first significant TV format.
  • Presenter Janin Ullmann, star of various reality TV shows, hopes her fame makes her an asset in this cutthroat game.
  • Football coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, now retired from the sport, brings a different kind of strategy to the table.

The Contestants' Feelings

"The game is quite stressful because reality and fiction blur," veteran journalist Jan Hofer confesses to the dpa. "I'm not naturally equipped for these kinds of shifty tactics. I'm not a good liar, not an intriguer, and I don't enjoy bluffing." Joe Laschet, however, embraces the challenge. "I brought some political experience and Instagram intuition into the game," he says. "During the campaign, I often took hits - but they weren't really aimed at me, but at my father or his party. As an influencer, I'm used to handling silly comments."

Relations among the players during the season? Joe Laschet shares a revealing insight. "There were no direct issues. But there was definitely a need for conversation!"

  1. The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the labelling of certain foodstuff, much like the intricate rules needed for playing 'The Traitor'.
  2. As the debut of 'The Traitor' season 3 approaches on April 29, celebrities might want to brace themselves for their new roles in this high-stakes game, reminiscent of the political wit hidden behind the scenes at the Vatican and RTL.
  3. In an intriguing twist, Jan Hofer, formerly of 'Tagesschau', now finds himself navigating the world of deception and lies in 'The Traitor', a stark contrast to his stoic news anchor persona.
  4. Former football coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg aims to bring her strategic prowess from the sports field into the uncharted territory of the entertaining reality TV show 'The Traitor'.
  5. Tecklenburg, celebrated fashion influencer Joe Laschet, and other celebrities participating in 'The Traitor' season 3 will have to adapt quickly to the mind-bending maze that is the game, all in the hopes of claiming the 50,000 euros prize.
