Parliament - Verbal Assault on Green Politicians: AfD MP Apologizes Amid Controversy

In a scandal that has rocked the Lower Saxony state parliament, AfD MP Marcel Queckemeyer has issued an apology for verbally attacking two female Green politicians. The incident happened in the state parliament foyer after Queckemeyer received criticism, leading him to remark, "The Greens must be voted out of office. They need to be stomped on and then gone."

On Wednesday, Queckemeyer expressed regret for his choice of words, acknowledging that they were unparliamentary and suggested violence. He admitted to being upset by perceived unfair treatment of a colleague and apologized if anyone felt offended or threatened.

The Greens, however, felt Queckemeyer's apology was not enough, with Volker Bajus, Parliamentary Secretary of the Greens, stating that threatening or intimidating other MPs was more than just an insult. The AfD parliamentary group has yet to address how they will handle Queckemeyer moving forward, ensuring such incidents don't recur. A criminal complaint is currently being examined by those affected, preparing for its submission.

Carina Hermann, Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU, described Queckemeyer's statements as transgressing criminal law, with witnesses from her parliamentary group present. Wiard Siebels from the SPD commented that a red line had been crossed, considering it the precursor to assault and labeling it a disturbing incident. Siebels also pointed out the racial undertones when Black MP Djenabou Diallo-Hartmann was targeted.

Queckemeyer had previously raised eyebrows during a state parliament session in September when he was asked to leave the chamber after being called to order three times by the presiding committee.

This scandal has led to calls for stronger actions against the AfD party, as this is not the first time an AfD MP has caused controversy. With many politicians urging the AfD to take responsibility and address the issue, the incident in Hanover's state parliament underscores the need for a more tolerant and respectful environment in political debates.
