"Says she's gone to a monastery, but she's trading in Moscow": A harsh statement about actress Yekaterina Vasilevskaya

Yekaterina Vasilyeva, a celebrated actress and People’s Artist of the RSFSR, left her public life years ago to join a convent. Known for her roles in films like An Ordinary Miracle and The Wizards, she took the monastic name Vasilisa. Yet recent claims suggest her life may not be as secluded as once believed.

Vasilyeva’s career once placed her among Russia’s most recognised performers. She starred in beloved Soviet-era films and was married twice—first to filmmaker Sergei Solovyov, then to playwright Mikhail Roshchin. Their son, Dmitry Roshchin, now serves as rector of the Church of St. Nicholas on the Three Hills, a role that reportedly influenced her decision to enter monastic life.

A close friend described her convent existence as one of strict routine, with little personal freedom and demanding fasting. But actor Yevgeny Steblov, 80, who worked alongside her, has cast doubt on this image. He claims Vasilyeva is selling candles in Moscow, despite her supposed withdrawal from the world. No public records confirm a manager or representative overseeing her activities. The discrepancy between her monastic vows and alleged commercial ventures remains unexplained.

The actress’s life now exists between two contrasting accounts: one of quiet devotion, the other of unexpected public engagement. While her past in cinema and theatre is well-documented, her current circumstances remain unclear. The claims about her selling candles in Moscow add a layer of mystery to her chosen path.
