Winter Weather: Restrictions in Regional Transport in Vogtland - Saxony’s winter chaos: Trains halted as snow cripples transport networks

Heavy snow and freezing temperatures are set to disrupt transport across Saxony this week. The Vogtland Transport Association has warned of delays and cancellations for both buses and trains in the Vogtland district from Friday onwards. Railway operators are now adjusting schedules to limit unplanned service cuts as conditions worsen.

Starting on January 9, all regional trains on Line 5 between Mehlteuer/Plauen and Falkenstein will stop running until further notice. Buses will replace the canceled services, though passengers should expect longer journey times.

Vogtlandbahn has also announced an operational winter timetable to prevent last-minute cancellations. From January 12, Line 2 will switch to a weekend schedule, with buses covering gaps and trips taking roughly 15 minutes longer than usual.

Meanwhile, Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) will introduce its own special winter timetable on Sunday, 14 December 2025, aligning with the broader timetable change. The adjustments aim to keep services running smoothly despite the harsh weather forecast for the region.

The changes mean fewer trains on key routes and longer travel times for passengers. Buses will fill in for canceled rail services, but delays remain likely. Transport authorities have urged travellers to check updates before setting out.
