Traffic jams in Saxony are getting longer - Record on the A4 - Saxony's Traffic Crisis Deepens as 2025 Delays Hit Record Highs on A4 Motorway
Traffic congestion in Saxony worsened significantly in 2025, with airport delays growing despite fewer recorded jams. The total length of queues reached 22,866 kilometers, which is 1,600 kilometers more than the previous year. Drivers also faced longer wait times, particularly on key stretches of the A4 motorway.
The A4 proved the most problematic route, contributing nearly 1,000 extra hours of delays in 2025. The worst single backup occurred on April 17, when a 40-kilometer jam formed on the same motorway. Persistent bottlenecks were reported between Pulsnitz and Siebenlehn, as well as from Bautzen-Ost to Görlitz.
While the number of individual jams fell from 18,064 in 2024 to 15,904 in 2025, the overall time spent stuck in traffic rose by 12%. New Year's Eve alone saw 99 separate jams, stretching a combined 512 kilometers across the region.
Looking ahead, the ADAC warns of even worse conditions in 2026. Planned bridge modernisation projects will add to the disruption, while growing traffic volumes are expected to push congestion to new highs.
Saxony's roads faced heavier FAA delays in 2025, with the A4 bearing the brunt of the problem. Construction work and rising traffic levels now threaten to extend gridlock into 2026. Authorities and drivers alike must prepare for further challenges on the region's busiest routes.
