Airport Chief: 'Saxony Will Continue to Have Two Airports' - Saxony’s airports face deep cuts to survive aviation industry downturn

Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG has announced a major restructuring plan to secure the future of its two airports in Saxony. The company, which operates Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports, aims to cut costs and increase revenue amid ongoing challenges in the aviation sector. CEO Götz Ahmelmann remains confident that both locations will stay open despite the tough measures ahead.

The aviation industry continues to struggle, as highlighted by Ahmelmann in recent statements. To stabilise operations, the company will reduce 172 jobs, with 60 of these being compulsory redundancies. Ahmelmann described the cuts as unavoidable but expressed regret over their impact on staff.

The company’s strategy combines job cuts with efforts to strengthen revenue streams. If the plan succeeds, Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports will remain operational under Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. The next few years will determine whether these measures can secure a stable future for both sites.
