Chillin' Out with African Swine Fever in Saxony: An Update

- Saxony Struggles with Animal Disease Outbreak

Got the scoop on African Swine Fever (ASF) in Saxony? You betcha! This viral swine menace is currently on the retreat, according to Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) who assures us it's mostly under control. Since August 2024, there's been just one reported case of ASF—in a Bautzen district piglet. From a whopping 2,398 ASF cases, a mere 55 are still active, meaning both their detection and transmission remain relatively recent. No backyard pigs have been struck down yet, thank goodness!

Quarantine zones to shrink even more in May? Oh yes! These zones currently exist mainly in parts of the Bautzen and Görlitz districts, covering approximately 3,000 square kilometers. Before, it was twice that size. As the number of active cases requiring containment measures continues to dwindle, Köpping floats the idea of further reducing these quarantines in May and lifting some of those pesky regulations for agriculture and other industries. Let's hope so!

But don't get too cocky - we gotta stay vigilant! So far, Saxony has shelled out around 54.8 million euros to put an end to this outbreak, with the feds pitching in a relatively puny sum. It's time for the federal states to bond together like a band of superheroes, ready to help each other out during epidemics. Most of that cash went towards erecting approximately 850 kilometers of metal fence. Guess that means they could FINALLY be taking a fence down here and there—plus, some fence was sold and some were recycled for scrap.

Thanks, hunting buddies! Saxony's hunting community gets major props for decreasing the wild boar population and helping locate deceased animals. A project backed by 2.8 million euros has put dogs and drones to work in the quest for dead animals. Approximately 1,800 of the 2,398 infected wild boars were found through these means. The Saxony State Institute of Health has also done an impressive job testing nearly 200,000 samples—including almost 90,000 from domesticated pigs—since October 2020.

ASF may be a buzzkill for pigs, but it doesn't pose a threat to humans or other animal species. Consider this: it's a viral infection that's almost always fatal and incurable, but neither survivors nor the victims will develop immunity to it. Direct transmission between animals is possible, while humans can unwittingly play a role by spreading ASF through contaminated objects or feed.

Wilhelm Bernstein, Vice-President of the Saxony Hunting Association, expressed that while ASF has been contained, it's far from conquered. Wild boars have been massively hunted, and ASF has taken a toll on their populations, but with mild winters and abundant food supplies, we can expect them to make a comeback.

Stay woke, folks! Though details on the reduction of quarantine zones aren't out yet, SAFE (ish) to say that ASF control measures remain in effect across affected regions in Germany.

Fun Facts!

  • Once it reached Germany, African Swine Fever was present in all 16 states by January 2021[1].
  • Wild boars are not the only ones whom ASF targets; domestic pigs and even warthogs can get infected[4].
  • Quarantine zones for ASF typically last 3 months, depending on whether the cases are isolated or widespread[3].

  1. In an effort to combat the ongoing African Swine Fever (ASF) in Saxony, the community is banking on aid for the development of the fisheries sector to provide an alternative livelihood for affected pig farmers.
  2. Despite the decreasing number of active ASF cases in Saxony, it's crucial to maintain vigilance and uphold agricultural regulations, as the potential for a resurgence remains.
  3. As the quarantine zones in Saxony continue to shrink, there's hope for the gradual removal of certain containment measures in the months to follow, potentially benefiting local industries beyond agriculture.
